Free handyman estimate template

A free handyman estimate template gives you the lines, the allowances and the assumptions to write down before the work is fully known.

The short version

A handyman estimate covers small mixed jobs, where the main risk is time running past what the client expected. A good handyman estimate separates the lines you are sure of from the ones that depend on what you find, and gives the client a range.

Handyman estimate lines and allowances

The estimate below is for a short list of small repairs where the number of hours is unknown. Each line is either firm or an allowance with a range of quantities. The rates are examples from the starter lines in the cost estimator, not market prices, so replace them with your own.

Line itemUnitQty or rangeExample rateBasis
Call-out and first hourjob1$75.00Firm
Additional hoursAllowance: hours depend on how many repairs are on the list.hour1 to 5$45.00Allowance
Materials and fastenersAllowance: small materials are billed as used.job1 to 2$60.00Allowance

Worked estimate range

Adding the firm lines to the allowances at their smallest and largest quantities gives a low end and a high end. The tax rate is an example only, so use your own and your local treatment.

Estimate rangeLow endHigh end
Firm lines$75.00$75.00
Allowances (minimum and maximum quantities)$105.00$345.00
Subtotal$180.00$420.00
Sales tax at an example rate of 8%$14.40$33.60
Estimated total$194.40$453.60

This is not a fixed price. It is a range the client can plan around until the unknowns are resolved.

Assumptions behind a handyman estimate

  • List. The range assumes the list described. Added items are priced at the hourly rate.
  • Time. Hours are a range because small repairs often reveal other problems.
  • Materials. Small materials are an allowance, billed at what is used.

What can change the price

Write these on the estimate so a revised figure is never a surprise:

  • Repairs that turn out to need a licensed trade.
  • More items on the list than first described.
  • Parts that need to be ordered.

When to send a quote instead

A handyman gives an estimate for a mixed or open-ended list, and a quote when the list is short, fixed and agreed. Once the scope is fixed, move to the handyman quote template, which adds a fixed scope, exclusions, a payment schedule and a place to sign.

The paperwork is the part that gets you paid

An estimate or a quote wins the job. A clear invoice with a due date gets it paid, and a late fee stated on the document is one you can actually apply.
