The document that authorises work to be done, describing the scope and signed before it starts.
Also called a job sheet, a service order, or a works order.
What it means in practice
A work order says what will be done, by whom, when, and under what terms. It is the record that the client asked for the work, which is what settles an argument about extras later.
It is not an invoice and it does not have to show prices. What it has to show is scope and a signature.

Where it shows up on the paperwork
The client and the site, the scope in plain words, the dates, who is doing the work, any terms, and a signature line. Prices are optional and often left off.
What goes wrong
- Doing the work on a verbal request and writing the paperwork afterwards.
- Describing the scope so loosely that the extras cannot be distinguished from the job.
- Leaving the signature line empty because the client was in a hurry.
