Free electrical estimate template

A free electrical estimate template gives you the lines, the allowances and the assumptions to write down before the work is fully known.

The short version

An electrical estimate has to separate the price of the visible work from whatever the existing wiring forces on the job. A good electrical estimate separates the lines you are sure of from the ones that depend on what you find, and gives the client a range.

Electrical estimate lines and allowances

The estimate below is for tracing a tripping circuit, where the cause may be a single device or something in the panel. Each line is either firm or an allowance with a range of quantities. The rates are examples from the starter lines in the cost estimator, not market prices, so replace them with your own.

Line itemUnitQty or rangeExample rateBasis
Diagnostic and service call feejob1$110.00Firm
Testing and inspection sign-offjob1$120.00Firm
Electrical panel replacementAllowance: only if the panel proves to be the fault.job0 to 1$650.00Allowance
Socket or switch installationAllowance: devices replaced depend on what fails testing.each1 to 4$55.00Allowance
LaborAllowance: labor depends on how many circuits are affected.hour2 to 6$60.00Allowance

Worked estimate range

Adding the firm lines to the allowances at their smallest and largest quantities gives a low end and a high end. The tax rate is an example only, so use your own and your local treatment.

Estimate rangeLow endHigh end
Firm lines$230.00$230.00
Allowances (minimum and maximum quantities)$175.00$1,230.00
Subtotal$405.00$1,460.00
Sales tax at an example rate of 8%$32.40$116.80
Estimated total$437.40$1,576.80

This is not a fixed price. It is a range the client can plan around until the unknowns are resolved.

Assumptions behind an electrical estimate

  • Starting point. The range assumes the fault is at a device or a single circuit. A panel fault is shown only as an allowance.
  • Existing wiring. It assumes the wiring behind the fault is sound. Unsafe findings are reported and priced separately.
  • Access. It assumes the panel and the affected walls are reachable without major opening up.

What can change the price

Write these on the estimate so a revised figure is never a surprise:

  • A panel found to be the cause.
  • Wiring that no longer meets current requirements.
  • More affected circuits than first reported.

When to send a quote instead

An electrician gives an estimate before opening a panel or tracing a fault, and a quote when the circuits and devices are counted and agreed. Once the scope is fixed, move to the electrical quote template, which adds a fixed scope, exclusions, a payment schedule and a place to sign.

The paperwork is the part that gets you paid

An estimate or a quote wins the job. A clear invoice with a due date gets it paid, and a late fee stated on the document is one you can actually apply.
