How to use this
Every profession below lists the units it usually bills by and a handful of real example line item descriptions for that trade. This is not a price list: rates vary by region, job and business, and nothing here invents a number. It is a reference for the wording, so the item on your quote reads the same way on the work order and the final invoice.
The one habit that matters most: pick a unit and a description for a job and keep it. A client who sees "labor hour" on the estimate and "service call" on the invoice for the same work has a reason to ask a question, even when the total is correct.

Why the wording matters more than it looks
An estimate, a quote and an invoice are usually read by different people at the client's end, sometimes days or weeks apart. The person approving the estimate is rarely the person paying the invoice. If the line item drifts between documents, the person paying has to reconcile two descriptions of the same work before they can approve it, and that reconciliation is exactly the kind of friction that slows an invoice down. Keeping the unit and the wording identical across the estimate, quote, work order and invoice removes that step entirely.
This also matters for a change order. If extra work is billed by the same unit already used on the original estimate, the added line reads as more of the same job rather than a new, unexplained charge.

It is not a pricing guide: rates are not included because they vary too much by region and business to state as fact.
